What Is a Good Balance on a $10,000 Credit Limit?

On a $10,000 total credit limit, a good balance is $3,000 or less (30% utilization), and $1,000 or less (10%) is even better. A $4,000 balance is 40% utilization.

What this means for you

With a $10,000 total limit, you have more room before utilization climbs, but it can still creep up quietly with a few larger purchases. The table shows what balance keeps you near 30% and near 10%, and how much you would need to pay down from where you are today.

Remember that utilization is measured two ways: across all of your cards and on each card by itself. One maxed out card can pull your score down even when your overall number looks fine, so spread paydowns to the card closest to its limit first.

Try not to close old cards to tidy things up. Closing a card removes its limit, which raises your utilization overnight.

Assumptions and sources

Utilization is total card balances divided by total card limits, as reported on your statement date.

Score effects vary by scoring model; the 30% and 10% levels are common guideposts, not guarantees.
